Psalm 110 Explained (Part 1)

This Psalm is another of the many benign, un-noticed prophetic declarations concerning the Lord Jesus Christ. In today’s and the next posting we will examine what lessons this prophetic psalm has for us as those waiting for the upward call of the Lord. This psalm speaks to:

  1. The endgame in God’s dealing with a rebellious world and its present ruler!
  2. The conquering King and Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ
  3. Those who are followers of the Lord, over whom He is highly placed as Lord of lords; and
  4. These followers who as brooks from who the waters of refreshing will flow in the raging conflict.

This much is evident from verses 6 and 7:

He will execute judgment [in overwhelming punishment] upon the nations; He will fill the valleys with the dead bodies, He will crush the [chief] heads over lands many and far extended. He will drink of the brook by the way; therefore, will He lift up His head [triumphantly]. Psalm 110:6-7 AMPC

Who are they? What will be their nature and what is the manner of refreshing that they constitute that will lift up His head in the day and midst of battle? Our best view of who they are is gleaned from those who fulfilled a similar role in His first coming. Please endeavour to read the referenced scriptures to savour the lessons to the fullest.
Consider these first examples:

  1. Mary sitting at His feet enjoying His word (Luke 10:38-42) and later anointing Him with the alabaster oil of precious ointment (John 12:1-8); a prioritisation of intimacy with her Lord over service and giving her greatest treasure in recognition of His sacrifice for all believers
  2. The poor widow offering her all (Mark 12:41-44), came in the nature of our heavenly Father who gave His only begotten son! How would she not become a beneficiary of the promise that ended Isaiah 53:2-11. She understood the disconnection between human expectations and divine purposes and lived it. She was unattractive and unremarkable in the setting, but the Master noticed!
  3. The Canaanite woman who asked that her daughter be healed even though she had no right to ask (Matthew 15:22-28). The harsh response would have turned away many because their ego was bruised; but not her! Her humility and response appealed to the kindness of heart of the Lord!
  4. The host of women who left all to be with Him both in life and at the point of death (Luke 8:1-3; John 19:25-27; Luke 24:1-10). When men went into hiding or stood a far, these women were fearless, loving Him at the risk of their lives.

Men and brethren, look into this mirror being set before you and make the adjustments in your life to fit the brook the Lord drinks from and let your life be a notable example that will lift up His head in encouragement. We will continue with a few more examples in the next posting.
Shalom.
