A Piece for The Older and Aging Believer

I recently came across a piece titled ‘Bitter words from Elders’ that set me reflecting on the words repeated below:

  1. Nobody respects a rag until their shoes is dirty, so stay in your corner. Don’t beg people to know your value, when the time comes, nobody will tell them to look for you
  2. Don’t be too available for people because “longtime no see” is better than “this idiot has come again.”
  3. Control your “Anger” because it is just one letter away from “Danger.”
  4. Don’t show everyone your wounds, not everyone is holding a bandage, some are with salt and vinegar to increase the pains.
  5. Never plant thorns on someone’s path, your children may take that route barefooted one day.
  6. One mistake you should never make in this life is to allow yourself to be recruited by someone to hate another person who hasn’t wronged you.
  7. Don’t compare your life with others, there is no comparison between the sun and moon, they shine when it’s their time.

Resorting to the scriptures, the only reference for the believer, listen here, beloved:

But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. and the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.2 Timothy 2:23-26

One of the many challenges of aging and retirement, particularly for the “has-beens” is the matter of relevance. Afraid of uselessness they struggle to prove they still have some superior amount of knowledge. Do they? In this ever-changing world of culture? Indeed, those who have tied themselves to, and lived by the unchanging truth of the eternal God, in their walk with God, they may be a walking library but certainly not in the changing goalpost of the prince of this world.

Your path to rest is staying and maintaining God’s worldview. For such the truth of Psalm 119:165 and Isaiah. 26:3 speak

Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.Psalm 119:165

Great peace have they who love Your law; nothing shall offend them or make them stumble.Psalm 119:165 AMPC

Those who love your law have perfect security, and there is nothing that can make them fall.Psalm 119:165 GNT

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.Isaiah 26:3

Keep your cool and give no counsel except you are asked or directed by the Lord to offer some (Jude 3) that way you will avoid using your convictions like a club to beat others over the head. Such acts only lead to arguments and dissensions.

2 Timothy 2:23-26 gives the way to contend for the faith. Plant the seed and let the Holy Spirit do His work (John 16:7-15) in whichever the camp, the Holy Spirit’s operation will do it. Selah
