When Feelings Reign (Part 1)—Jeremiah 17: 9(NLT)

Our feelings or emotions make or become terrible gods. Quoting from a 2019, DesiringGod article on the subject

‘We live in an emoji world where self-expression and “being the true you” hold highest priority …Our unfiltered emotional life can, and some say should, extend to any and all persons — spouses, parents, or strangers included. Some even commend yelling at God when upset. In all, the assumption stands: you are your emotions (your feelings for better or worse. To repress them is to repress yourself…but as C.S. Lewis articulates in The Abolition of Man, men such as Plato, Aristotle, and Augustine have reasoned that our emotional responses, rather than being fixed dispositions, could (and must) be trained.

Does God expect us to train our feelings? He commands them. God commands obedience “from the heart” (Romans 6:17) because the unconverted heart is the seat of deceit, and of deceptively destructive feelings or emotions. Our text Jeremiah 17:9,10 (NLT) speaks—

The human heart is the most deceitful of all things, and desperately wicked. Who really knows how bad it is? But I, the LORD, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.

Only the Lord who knows it can fix the heart, the vessel we often judge as ungovernable. He, tells us what to fear and what not to fear (Luke 12:4–5); what we must and must not delight in (Philippians 4:4); what we must abhor (Romans 12:9) and that we must never be anxious (Philippians 4:6).

Beloved, it is a dangerous time to be ruled or governed by your feelings and emotions. It is time to decidedly practice 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 (NLT)—

We are human, but we don’t wage war as humans do. We use God’s mighty weapons, not worldly weapons, to knock down the strongholds of human reasoning and to destroy false arguments. We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.

Not to do this is to render ourselves open to the increasing activities of Satan and his subordinate powers who are working in every way to prevent, harm and destroy the very elect and will do away with them first if possible! Satan is working through various types of science, technology, medicine and many levels of government, of cults and false systems who will bring railing accusations against God’s elect. This is where your discipline of feelings and submission to God’s word brings you into God’s pavilion of safety. So, beloved, take heed to yourself. Shalom.
