What And Where Is Your Anchor? (Part 1)—Genesis 15:1-6

One of the “old school songs” growing up in the faith was Ruth Caye Jones’ song In Times Like These with these lyrics:

In times like these you need a Saviour,
In times like these you need an anchor;
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

This Rock is Jesus, Yes, He’s the One;
This Rock is Jesus, The only One!
Be very sure, be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the Solid Rock!

Perhaps you know the song! How very appropriate for these days. Times, events and circumstances can and will challenge God’s promise, but the eyes of the mind behold and remain fixed, seeing the promised as fulfilled. This is what faith is, and what it rests upon. What does the eye of the mind see? (Gen. 15:1-6).

Such is my summary of the life of Abraham, after studying his numerous encounters with Yahweh Elohim from Genesis 11:10 through to Genesis 25:11. The eyes of his mind saw and held the promises as fulfilled. In our text for today, the heart of the matter is the unchanging reality that the stars show up every night, a constant reminder of God’s sovereign power and faithfulness; the sands of the sea did not disappear (Jer. 33:19-22).

Hebrews 6:18-20 (TPT) says:

It is impossible for God to lie for we know that his promise and his vow will never change! And now we have run into his heart to hide ourselves in his faithfulness. This is where we find his strength and comfort, for he empowers us to seize what has already been established ahead of time—an unshakable hope! We have this certain hope like a strong, unbreakable anchor holding our souls to God himself. Our anchor of hope is fastened to the mercy seat in the heavenly realm beyond the sacred threshold, and where Jesus, our forerunner, has gone in before us. He is now and forever our royal Priest like Melchizedek. Hebrews 6:18-20 (TPT)

So, beloved, who and where is your anchor? Selah
