There is so much in the scriptures that enables us see our real selves. Men can paint pictures of us that can deceive us that we constantly need to use the mirror of the word to examine ourselves. David cried in Psalm 139:23-24.
God, I invite your searching gaze into my heart. Examine me through and through; find out everything that may be hidden within me. Put me to the test and sift through all my anxious cares. See if there is any path of pain I’m walking on, and lead me back to your glorious, everlasting way—the path that brings me back to you. Psalm 139:23-24 (TPT)
Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong—then guide me on the road to eternal life. Psalm 139:23-24 (MSG)
As we ponder the spirit of David, a comparison of his depositions in Psalm 65:2-3 and Psalm 34:4-6 reveals another dimension of his spirit.
You who answers prayer, all of humanity comes before you with their requests. Though we are overcome by our many sins, your sacrifice covers over them all. Psalm 65:2-3 (TPT)
God met me more than halfway; he freed me from my anxious fears. Look at him; give him your warmest smile. Never hide your feelings from him. When I was desperate, I called out, and God got me out of a tight spot. God’s angel sets up a circle of protection around us while we pray. Psalm 34:4-6 (MSG)
It is one thing to know that God hears prayers; but will all indeed come to Him who has given open access? True humility leads us to dependence upon God, not independence!
Psalm 34:4-6 so reveals:
- Should or will a king see the need to come to God for anything, after all he is king? Our text answers to this, testifying to the spirit of David
- all who look to Him come back with radiant faces; the poor who cry to Him is heard and saved from all his troubles (see Psalm 34:4-6)
Why delay? Swallow your shame or pride, He will forgive confessed sin. Enter into your rest. Shalom.
