The Lord’s Day

by Pastor Afolabi Oladele

I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of deathRevelation 1:10-18

Our reference text opens with the Lord’s Day, a reminder of the awesome power at work. The greatest power on earth at the time of His crucifixion sealed the tomb, posting the most dreaded armed forces as guards! Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch. Matthew 27:62-66

But, there is no power on earth that could hold Him down. That the word might be fulfilled as written in Psalm 118:22-26, the rejected and resurrected Lord was the wonder and reason of the Lord’s Day.

Let each Lord’s Day be an occasion of worship and a time to listen intently and hear the Lord’s instructions as John did with clarity and without ambiguity. One such clear instruction is recorded by Paul in Ephesians 1:19: I pray that you will begin to understand how incredibly great his power is to help those who believe him. I say again; as the Lord said to John, fear not. Shalom.
