The following post is culled from Life Application Bible
“Her husband was a trusted and loyal soldier in the King’s army. Apparently, so had her father (2 Sam.11:3; 2 Sam. 23:34). She wasn’t just a face in the crowd; much of her world revolved around this king. The men in her life trusted him. So when the king summoned, there was no question of how Bathsheba would respond. Not only was it a royal command, it was a matter of respect.
Bathsheba was caught in a lose-lose situation. Could she resist the king, her husband’s boss, at great risk to her own welfare and possibly to her husband’s career? Or she could be unfaithful to her husband? We would never know except you wore her shoes, not to talk of the weight of shaming a king! And the dilemma intensified when she became pregnant.
We don’t know if she knew or what she thought of David’s maneuverings to cover up the scandal, or if she was even aware of them. But she knew she was at the center of a royal embarrassment and subject to forces beyond her control. Her husband died in battle while a new life grew within her. And soon she became the bride of a guilty king.
The child died soon after birth, but Bathsheba was now in the royal household. She gave birth to another son, especially loved by God, and eventually three other children”— Taken from NIV Life Appilcation Study Bible
In our limited wisdom, how on earth could she not suffer some chastisement for acquiescing to the gross misdeed? Did she ever come to know the scheming that robbed her of her husband?
“Yet, God used the traumatic ordeal of her relationship with David as an occasion for God to further establish his Kingdom and David’s legacy. She became the queen mother and a fixture in the ancestry of the Messiah”— Taken from NIV Life Appilcation Study Bible
Again the inexplicable working of grace, a message to all who have suffered similar fate in these present times!
“In Their Steps
Bathsheba could have easily looked at David’s wrongdoing-and the consequences ordered by God, including the death of her infant son-and dreaded her future. But God has a way of redeeming messy situations and incorporating them into his plan, even building his Kingdom on the places we thought were hopeless ruins. The origin of a situation isn’t nearly as important to God as its outcome. Bathsheba’s story became an integral part of God’s plan”— Taken from NIV Life Appilcation Study Bible
Grace at work for those who will receive its offer. Selah
