The “I Wills” of the Lord our God (Part 5): Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17

Speaking to those early fishermen He said, “If you will follow me, I will make you fishers of men.” That is the “I will ” of service. What a loss to their own lives and to the cause of the Lord are those Christians who have only made a profession of religion, and stopped there. If a man be a true Christian, he wins souls. He cannot help it; for His promise says: “If you will follow me, I will make you fishers of men”. Peter caught more men at Pentecost than he ever caught fish in his nets. **

Come to think of it, consider this same Peter who queried the Lord in Matthew 19:27; Luke 18:28, in the light of Acts 2:41, what would Peter feel?

What did they leave? A few old fishing boats and broken nets. How do these compare to the joy of salvation they felt seeing men troop to Christ! They were looking to those things they had left behind just like today when a great many people are still hampered by what they must leave behind to serve Him! It is not a necessity to leave the things of this life He freely gave you when you follow him. It is not a condition that you give up your business, if it’s a legitimate one but you cannot and must not set your heart on the old nets should He ask of you to. No man follows Christ and ever regrets it; and the nearer we get to him the more useful we become. Then we will see men saved.

When it is all over, I would rather have a man come to my grave and drop a tear and say: “Here lies the man who converted me, who brought me to the cross of Christ” than have this man build a column of pure gold reaching to the skies in my honor. If you want to be useful to Him, follow Him. You will succeed, if you follow him. Whenever you find a man who follows Christ, there is man who is successful. He doesn’t need to be a preacher, he doesn’t need to be an evangelist, to be useful. He may be useful in business. See what power an employer has, if he would labor with his employees, and in his business relations. Often a man can be far more useful in a business sphere than he could in another. If we want to spend a life of usefulness, accept Him, and He will make you “fishers of men.” **Culled from The I Wills of Christ by D. L. Moody
