The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. John 4:19-24
The Lord spoke directly to her heart of what she must know about God:
- Who God is; and
- How to approach, relate with and worship God
God wants a temple to dwell in, and requires that the believer be His temple to dwell in, Severally, He communicated this to Israel – Exodus 19:6; Leviticus 26:11-12, 24; Jeremiah 30:21b-23; Jeremiah 24:7; Jeremiah 31:1,33 and Revelation 21.
Since God is Spirit, He must have a language natural to Him and His realm of existence just as the English man speaks English etc. God has a Spirit language spoken as an unknown tongue; for which reason we are admonished to pray in the Spirit – Romans 8:26-27; 1 Corinthians 14: 2,14-15; Ephesians 2:18; Ephesians 5:18; Ephesians 6:18 and Jude 1:20. Yes, praying in the Holy Spirit, is praying in the language of the Spirit, an overflow of a heart that is filled with the Holy Ghost.
Brethren, authentic worship of God must be done in “spirit and in truth” and it is the outflowing of gratitude and recognition of God’s gracious lovingkindness and divine majesty, sometimes in the Spirit language and sometimes with our minds! And also, in the truth of God’s word, if you can visualize what Psalm 91:4b speaks to – His truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
