Taking What Has Been Given

Sermon outline of message preached on 15 April 2018 by Pastor Noel Abdullahi

Both on the local and international scene, the realities that we are in the last days cannot be gain said. Over the weekend, the United States and her allies launched a missile attack on Syria accusing her of using chemical weapons on one of the rebel cities.

Russia and Iraq have been supporting this regime, and consider this attack illegal and also proclaimed that this action has consequences. Some prophetic watchers say, this could be a build up to the fulfilment of Revelation 9:13-16.

Despite Nigeria’s economic and political doldrums, the government of the day has no solution to all the pressing national challenges, leaving people confused, disillusioned and frustrated with themselves and the government.

Why this message at this time?
• To keep us focused on the goal of being Christ which is the promise we received from the father (Romans 8:18)
• To use the prophetic time element to keep us on our toes, realising that we do not have much time for entering into the rest (being Christ) that God has for us (Romans 8:19)
• remind us of our real inheritance -walking in the New Testament realities as revealed by Christ. Lamentations 3:24 (NLT, GNT); Psalm 16:5-7 (TLB).

Warning
command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment (1 Timothy 6:17)

A sure inheritance – 1 Peter 1:3-4
blessed be the God and father of our lord Jesus Christ, who according to his abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time – 1 Peter 1:3-4

Most of us spend too many waking hours thinking about the problems we have, bills we must pay and day to day frustrations. We focus on what we lack instead of what we have. We not only dwell on our own imperfections but also on the imperfections of others.

In order to take what has been given, we must focus on what we have and that which has been given!

all things are yours to the extent that you are Christ’s
Therefore let no one boast in men. For all things are yours: whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas, or the world or life or death, or things present or things to come—all are yours. and you are Christ’s, and Christ is God’s – 1 Corinthians 3:21-23

according as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and Godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue (2 Peter 1:3)
Ephesians 4:11-13 [AMP]

Conditions for taking what is given – accurate knowledge John 1:12, 2 Timothy 3:5,7, Galatians 4:1, 1 Timothy 2:4 (accurate knowledge)
You take what is given by growing into it!
If I refuse to grow, I will never be able to take that which has been given to me

accurate knowledge – panacea for growth – 1 Peter 2:1-2, 1 Peter 1:22 , 2 Peter 1: 4-10

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby. 1 Peter 2:1-2

Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently. 1 Peter 1:22

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall. 2 Peter 1:4-10

• accurate knowledge = right spirit + truth (right doctrine) –  Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)
• accurate knowledge ≠ wrong spirit + truth (right doctrine) – It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives. Philippians 1:15 (NLT).
• accurate knowledge ≠ right spirit + truth (wrong doctrine) – Acts 18:24-25.

And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to Ephesus. This man was instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in the spirit, he spake and taught diligently the things of the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John. Acts 18:24-25
