What is a lie? Are you a liar? A lie is an untrue statement with intent to deceive or mislead or cover up or hide a deed. The first liar was Satan, who lied to Eve in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3:3-4).
Jesus spoke much to what happened in that Garden of Eden in John 8:44—
You are of your father, the devil, and it is your will to practice the lusts and gratify the desires [which are characteristic] of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a falsehood, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar [himself] and the father of lies and of all that is false. John 8:44 (AMPC)
Lying belongs to the old man, that was the slave of Satan but not to the new man.
But now it’s time to eliminate them from your lives once and for all—anger, fits of rage, all forms of hatred, cursing, filthy speech, and lying. Lay aside your old Adam-self with its masquerade and disguise. For you have acquired new creation life which is continually being renewed into the likeness of the One who created you; giving you the full revelation of God. In this new creation life, your nationality makes no difference, nor your ethnicity, education, nor economic status—they matter nothing. For it is Christ that means everything as he lives in every one of us! You are always and dearly loved by God! So, robe yourself with virtues of God, since you have been divinely chosen to be holy. Be merciful as you endeavor to understand others, and be compassionate, showing kindness toward all. Be gentle and humble, unoffendable in your patience with others. Colossians 3:8-12 (TPT)
So discard every form of dishonesty and lying so that you will be known as one who always speaks the truth, for we all belong to one another. Ephesians 4:25 (TPT)
Note further instructions from the Psalmist and his son, Solomon—
Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.Psalm 31:18
Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue.Psalm 120:2
These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, an heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. Proverbs 6:16-19
The lip of truth shall be established for ever: but a lying tongue is but for a moment.Proverbs 12:19
A true witness delivereth souls: but a deceitful witness speaketh lies.Proverbs 14:25
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape…A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish. Proverbs 19:5,9
A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin.Proverbs 26:28
We will do well to go through each of these scriptures to know the gravity of lying in any form, for Revelation 21:8 declares that in that last Garden—
But as for the cowards and the ignoble and the contemptible and the cravenly lacking in courage and the cowardly submissive, and as for the unbelieving and faithless, and as for the depraved and defiled with abominations, and as for murderers and the lewd and adulterous and the practicers of magic arts and the idolaters (those who give supreme devotion to anyone or anything other than God) and all liars (those who knowingly convey untruth by word or deed)–[all of these shall have] their part in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone. This is the second death’. Revelation 21:8 (AMPC)
Seeing this, what manner of believer are you? A liar? This is the time to receive grace to eliminate this from your life. Shalom.
