And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men…some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught...(Matthew 28:2-4, 11b-15)
Bribery and corruption are probably as old as any sin you can name. Exodus 23:8, Psalm 26:10; Proverbs 17: 8, 23; Isaiah 1:23, Isaiah 5:23 and Amos 5:12 to just name a few, give the bible view. It played out here with the religious and political leaders in the days of the Lord as reported here in our text for today.
What benefit is it to you, o bribe taker? The bible speaks clearly to this in Job15:34 (NLT)! For the godless are barren. Their homes, enriched through bribery, will burn (Job 15:34 NLT). That should make you think twice. Why will you make your life barren and have what you built go up in flames? Repent and cease from being a partaker of the conspiracy of evil!
