Instructions For A Right Start For The New Year’s Journey (Part 1)

As we start the second half of the month of January, we let us reaffirm to ourselves the truth expressed by the Lord as recorded in the gospel of John in John 10:4-5 and John 12:26-32; and intentionally pursue them. We focus on the first of the two scriptures, John 10:4-5.

And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And a stranger will they not follow but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers. John 10:4-5 (KJV)

The relevance derives from the following:

  1. The shepherd typically puts forth the sheep in the morning, at the start and freshness of the day. We draw the similitude that the truth expressed here also holds for the start and freshness of the new year, and we must take note of the clear instructions inherent in the Master’s words as our Great Shepherd.
  2. The shepherd guarantees leadership to the sheep,
  3. but the sheep take responsibility to follow with undivided attention. This is very important because different shepherds have different voices. It is the responsibility of the sheep to be sufficiently familiar with the voice of his shepherd; otherwise, he drifts carelessly away into danger when it should be fleeing.

Your living in the victory procured by the Great Shepherd will depend on your personal intimacy, for the Lord’s voice indicates experiential knowledge through a consistent relationship with Him. This is where your challenge lies! Will you walk in the guidance promised in this scripture? Shalom.
