Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest. And he that reapeth receiveth wages, and gathereth fruit unto life eternal: that both he that soweth and he that reapeth may rejoice together. And herein is that saying true, One soweth, and another reapeth. I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours. John 4:35-38
The significance Lord’s reference to four months in our text is probably lost on many believers. It is the same period of four months occurring between the last of the Spring Feasts of Israel (the feast of Pentecost) and the first of the Fall Feasts (Feast of Trumpets). That gap of time when no convocations happened with Israel as pointing to the church age. The beginning of the church age was recorded for us in Acts 2 and the awesome event of that beginning culminated in a harvest of souls for the kingdom of God. The entire summer period in reference, not the end of summer is the time to harvest souls to the Kingdom of God.
We cannot claim ignorance and say there is still time and keep procrastinating. This is the harvest time. In our two previous lessons on Capernaum, ‘gentile outcasts’, the Roman Centurion and Syrophonecian confessed the Lord Jesus Christ and were saved. As Paul said in Romans 10:14-15, how can they believe on Him of whom they have not heard?
Let us take heed to the urgency inherent in our text of today, knowing the night is upon us when no man can work (John 9:4).
