The Bible pointedly admonishes against talkativeness and idle speaking. Social media and the societal culture within which we live easily draw us into conversations that are inexcusable for believers. In the guise of creating a fun environment in the places of worship jesters are brought that desecrate the holy institution to which we are called. Let’s draw attention to the peril which results from our careless participation in such conversations.
- The Lord Jesus warned in Matthew 12:34b-37 (NKJV)—For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Ponder these golden words for your utterances not only reflect your heart and who rules you; but more the judgment attendant to each evil word we speak.
- This wisdom has been known by the ancients as written by the Preacher and wise man of the Old Testament who wrote severally wrote, in
- Proverbs 12:13 (TPT)—The wicked will get trapped by their words of gossip, slander, and lies (sinful words). But for the righteous, honesty is its own defense.
- Proverbs 13:3 (TPT)—Guard your words and you’ll guard your life, but if you don’t control your tongue, it will ruin everything.
- Proverbs 21:23 (TPT)—Watch your words and be careful what you say, and you’ll surprised by how few troubles you’ll have.
- Ecclesiastes 5:1,2 (NKJV)—Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil. Do not be rash with your mouth, and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; therefore, let your words be few.
We are the masters of our unspoken words and the slaves of words that should have been left unsaid. May we heed these warnings. Selah.
