Discernment of Doctrine (Part 2)—John 7:16-18

We draw attention to the important lessons in these powerful words for every one that proclaims the word of God in any of the offices.

Jesus answered them by saying, My teaching is not My own, but His Who sent Me. If any man desires to do His will (God’s pleasure), he will know (have the needed illumination to recognize, and can tell for himself) whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from Myself and of My own accord and on My own authority. He who speaks on his own authority seeks to win honor for himself. [He whose teaching originates with himself seeks his own glory.] But He Who seeks the glory and is eager for the honor of Him Who sent Him, He is true; and there is no unrighteousness or falsehood or deception in Him. John 7:16-18 AMPC

  1. Every spoken word that glorifies the speaker is not of God!
  2. Doing the will of God, His pleasure as expressed in the written word or as expressed by the Holy Spirit, enables our discernment of the teaching, whether it is of God or of man; for every teaching that glorifies man is an exercise in unrighteousness.

What a thin line to watch before we fall out of line with the word of the Lord.

How we need to heed the warning of those who have gone ahead of us (Romans 12:31 Corinthians 8:2,32 Corinthians 3:5 and 2 Corinthians 6:1-10). Let us take heed to these things. Shalom.
