Consult With The Holy Spirit Before Reacting

Surge protectors or power strips are commonly used in circuits to prevent damage to equipment from power surges; the same principle is at work in James 1:19. The delay between those acts gives us room to consult with the Holy Spirit, the Standby One who will honour those who apply James 1:5-7.

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. James 1:5-7 (KJV)

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. James 1:5-7 (NLT)

If you don’t know what you’re doing, pray to the Father. He loves to help. You’ll get his help, and won’t be condescended to when you ask for it. Ask boldly, believingly, without a second thought. People who “worry their prayers” are like wind-whipped waves. Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that wayJames 1:5-7 (MSG)

There are consequences to failing to observe this caution demanded of each of us. We learn the consequences.

Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Proverbs 29:20 (KJV)

There is more hope for a fool than for someone who speaks without thinking. Proverbs 29:20 (NLT)

Observe the people who always talk before they think—even simpletons are better off than they are. Proverbs 29:20 MSG

Proverbs 26:12 shows that a hasty response is a sign of being wise in one’s own eyes

Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. Proverbs 26:12 (KJV)

There is more hope for fools than for people who think they are wise. Proverbs 26:12 (NLT)

See that man who thinks he’s so smart? You can expect far more from a fool than from him. Proverbs 26:12 (MSG)

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few… a fool’s voice is known by multitude of words. Ecclesiastes 5:2,3b (KJV)

Don’t shoot off your mouth, or speak before you think. Don’t be too quick to tell God what you think he wants to hear. God’s in charge, not you—the less you speak, the better…Overtalk shows you up as a fool. Ecclesiastes 5:2,3b (MSG)

This is the reason for Paul’s prayer in Colossian 2:3 which could be read as follows:

To the full knowledge of the mystery of God’s Christ in who alone is the unsearchable and matchless riches of God revealed. In Christ alone are all the treasures of God’s wisdom and knowledge for us to discover and enjoy in fellowship with Him and another. In Him we discover God’s mind, and His view of all worldly issues to enable us reason correctly. All these He communicated to us by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13), the standby One that He promised.

May we receive grace to be intentional in seeking total reliance on the Holy Spirit, according Him the place to do all He promised to do in us. Selah.
