Have you ever seen firefighters fight fire with fire? Definitely, no. Consider the following scriptures for wise counsel:
- Proverbs 14:17, 29 (NLT)—Short-tempered people do foolish things, and schemers are hated…People with understanding control their anger; a hot temper shows great foolishness.
- Proverbs 15:1, 18 (NLT)—A gentle answer deflects anger, but harsh words make tempers flare…A hot-tempered person starts fights; a cool-tempered person stops them.
- Proverbs 16:32 (NLT)—Better to be patient than powerful; better to have self-control than to conquer a city.
- Proverbs 22:24-25 (NLT)—Don’t befriend angry people or associate with hot-tempered people, or you will learn to be like them and endanger your soul.
We must avoid being impulsive as much as possible in any situation, knowing that this is a reflection of how much respect we have for others and a demonstration of humility on our part. We must learn to listen to others and not just keep speaking.
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry. Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires…If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. James 1:19,20,26 (NLT)
Shouldn’t we pursue being like the Lord according to the demand of Romans 8:29 (NLT)? He was never angry over what anyone did to Him or His person; neither did He retaliate or lash out at those who wronged Him. May we be like Him. Shalom.
