The Wrath of Man—James 1:20; Psalm 76:10

Continuing from where we stopped, let us understand what the wrath of man is and see how it becomes crucial to our decoupling of anger from sin. Wrath is defined as STRONG, VENGEFUL ANGER! A retributory punishment for an offence. From the instructions given in:

Deuteronomy 32:35 (NLT)I will take revenge; I will pay them back. In due time their feet will slip. Their day of disaster will arrive, and their destiny will overtake them.

Romans 12:19-21(NLT)Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD. Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

Hebrews 10:30 (NLT)For we know the one who said, “I will take revenge. I will pay them back.”

We glean from these scriptures what the anger that seeks retribution implies! It is impatience, pride, a lack of confidence in the timing of God’s justice and a demonstration that we do not know God! Is this true of me and you? At its extreme and if we are not restrained, the wrath of man comes with blasphemous speeches that ought not to come from a believer.

This is where Psalm 76:10 comes like a two-edged sword. The furious attempts of your enemies will serve God’s glory, causing His people and others to magnify Him for the wisdom, the power and the faithfulness with which He executes judgment. And whatever else remains in the heart of the enemy that remains unearthed God will restrain it. So, on which side will you be?

On the side of the enemy executing retribution out of anger or on the side of the “waiters upon,” who wait for God to vindicate them? Think on this. Shalom.
