The Spirit of David (Part 1)—1 Chronicles 17

There is much to learn about the spirit of David than just being one who offered praises.

1 Chronicles 17 provides us insight concerning our subject for today. What other man in the history of Israel had God always at the centre of his thoughts, to the point of identifying God’s “need” and doing something about it? We always think of ourselves. How often do we think of God and the things that matter to Him and gladden His heart?

1 Chronicles 17 shows us more, revealing the heart of our appreciative Heavenly Father, and the extent to which He would defend what He has said.

Satan would contend even that covenant which has foundation in heavenly declarations:

And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. Genesis 3:14-15

Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise: thy hand shall be in the neck of thine enemies; thy father’s children shall bow down before thee. Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. Genesis 49:8-10

I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city. And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever. Numbers 24:17-20

for many generations after David’s death. Satan sought to thwart and destroy the promise in the tragedy of 2 Chronicles 22-23, a dramatic moment in the Messianic history. The ancestor of Christ, the son of David was preserved. Had Joash been killed, humanly speaking our Saviour would not have been born but God’s providence was overseeing this covenant that had its origin in a man who had God at the centre of his thoughts. This is the call to you beloved of the Lord and for your preservation, so you are made whole in Christ.

Help came from an inconsequential person, not the famous on earth but one situated in God’s scheme of events! God raised up Jehoiada. Is this some intervention or act of grace on my path that may have everlasting impact on the kingdom of God? This is the time to find out for yourself. Selah
