At a time when it is fashionable for children from Christian homes to blame parents for failed parenting, it is comforting to note from the scriptures that parental sincerity, defective as their methods may appear, is acknowledged by God’s word (Hebrews 12:10a). Without making an excuse, parents in sincerity led, based on how much they knew.
- While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. Hebrews 12:10a (MSG)
- For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. Hebrews 12:10a (NLT)
With this reality, don’t rob yourself of the God given cover that comes with honoring your parents!
- Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. “Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.” Ephesians 6:1-3 (NLT)
- Children, do what your parents tell you. This is only right. “Honor your father and mother” is the first commandment that has a promise attached to it, namely, “so you will live well and have a long life.” Ephesians 6:1-3 (MSG)
- Children, if you want to be wise, listen to your parents and do what they tell you, and the Lord will help you. For the commandment, “Honor your father and your mother,” was the first of the Ten Commandments with a promise attached: “You will prosper and live a long, full life if you honor your parents.” Ephesians 6:1-3 (TPT)
Why will you lose such a cover?
