What Is Conscience? What Is The State of Yours? (Part 1)

In the Bible, the conscience is the inner moral compass that witnesses to whether your thoughts, words, and actions align with God’s standards. It is the part of your mind that instinctively “accuses” you when you do wrong (bringing guilt) or “excuses” you when you do right (bringing peace).

1. The Biblical Definition
The primary Greek word translated as conscience in the New Testament is “suneidēsis”, which means “moral awareness” or “joint knowledge” (knowing something along with yourself).

The most comprehensive biblical description is found in Romans 2:14-15, where the Apostle Paul explains that God has written His moral law on human hearts, allowing the conscience to act as an internal witness that guides behavior.

For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another. Romans 2:14-15

2. States of the Conscience
The New Testament describes several conditions of the human conscience, reflecting how it can be shaped or damaged:

  • Clear or Good Conscience: A state where you act in moral integrity and do not harbor unconfessed guilt. Paul frequently strove to maintain a “clear conscience” before God and others (e.g. Acts 24:16).
  • Weak Conscience: A conscience that is overly sensitive or lacks deep understanding of biblical freedoms, leading to unnecessary feelings of guilt, as described in 1 Corinthians 8.
  • Seared or Defiled Conscience: A conscience that has become hardened and insensitive to sin due to repeated wrongdoing, making it difficult to discern right from wrong (1 Timothy 4:2).

3. Purpose and Function
It is not the ultimate judge: The conscience does not create the rules; it merely reacts to whatever value system you have adopted. Therefore, a person’s conscience must be continually informed and educated by God’s Word to function properly. It warns you: It acts like an alarm system in your heart, signaling when you have violated your own moral code.

4. Cleansing the Conscience
Because the conscience can register guilt and shame when you fall short of God’s perfect standard, the Bible emphasizes that the only way to truly cleanse a guilty conscience is through the forgiveness of Christ. Through faith and confession, God cleanses the human heart and removes the weight of guilt, allowing you to serve Him with a renewed mind (Hebrews 9:14; 1 John 1:9).
