The Spirit of David (Part 2)—1 Chronicles 17

Reflecting on David’s disposition recorded in 1 Chronicles 17:1-2, a few questions come to mind

  • What fills my heart?
  • Who is my companion or with whom do I spend my slack moments? Did David slip from the benefit of keeping the right company in allowing the ‘traveller’ to get a hold of him? Compare 2 Samuel 7:1-7 with 2 Samuel 12:1-6!
  • What is the subject of my communication in the company of people?

Psalm 1:1 says

Oh, blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, not standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of scorners

Oh, that my delight and my meditation is You, Lord. Oh, be my meditation, Lord, so will I know You and have no other place of recourse in the day of trouble!

Consider Eric Clermont’s thought on the life and times of David quoted below:

“The sword always precedes the sceptre (Isaiah 52:13-15). If God had handed David the kingdom immediately after his encounter with Goliath, David may not have grown to be near to God. David demonstrated exceptional faith with a sling, so God could entrust him with a sword, and only when he wielded the sword in wisdom, God handed him the scepter (Hebrews 2:10; 1 Peter 5:10; Romans 8:17b)”

But see and learn how carelessness in the place of comfort destroyed his family, but for God’s covenant faithfulness. David repented and reconnected with God. Do you have the spirit of David? Selah.
