The True Disciple (Part 2)

What does Colossians 3:16 convey?

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. Colossians 3:16

Consider the imagery conveyed in gold mining; where it is said the vein of the gold bearing rock when drilled is rich in gold. Infused in that vein is an abundance of that precious metal. In situ in me, is there an abundance of the word of God found there? Each time I am drilled, explored what is found? Is it the word of God or something else? Am I filled, saturated with worldly or self-wisdom? Are my thoughts, considerations, evaluations and judgment of issues deriving from the wisdom of the word of God or my emotions or logic? It takes a disposition as the Lord’s in John 5:30.

I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath sent me. John 5:30

How much and how often am I hearing from God? (John 8:24). How soaked is my life in the word? Without the word dwelling richly in my whole being and in application wisdom, how can I teach accurately?

**Let’s take this ‘soak-saturate-percolate’ idea a step further. Perhaps this will help you ease into meditation instead of feeling overwhelmed by the thought that you don’t have the time or discipline to do it. Meditating on His word is not an all-or-nothing challenge. Take small steps. If you have only ten minutes, maximise each one of them. You don’t have to read ten chapters of your Bible in day. You’re not doing a book report for school, and you’re not going to be graded on a test.

Read the Isaiah 28:13 and it will help you

‘But the word of the Lord was to them, “precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little” (v. 13 NKJV).

God’s Word is so rich with truth that you can take one phrase or one idea and let it percolate and brew in your mind, whether you have ten minutes or two hours. Instead of watching TV or constantly checking your phone for messages, just sit still, drink your water, coffee or tea, and let God’s indwelling Spirit interpret, enlarge, and enrich His Word as you roll it over and over in your mind. Think about it during your drive or bus time, or your lunch or tea breaks. Some days you will feel like you have hit the jackpot spiritually; other days you will just feel like you have added a little more to your basic Bible knowledge. Consistency is the key. Do this for one year, and you will have 365 scriptural insights to draw on. Can you see how this could change your life for the better?**—Adapted from The Word For Today by Bob Gass

Shalom.
