The True Disciple (Part 1)

The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord. Matthew 10:24

The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. Luke 6:40

These scriptures leave us with clear instructions on the responsibility of disciples to be like their Master. Paul echoed the same sentiment of our God in Romans 8:29 leaving us with the question of how do we attain to this?

Isaiah 28:9-13 reveals how our teacher teaches, and it is the responsibility of a good student to adapt to the teacher’s style.

“Whom will he teach knowledge? And whom will he make to understand the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just drawn from the breasts? For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.” For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, To whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,”…..“This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear. But the word of the Lord was to them, “Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.” Isaiah 28:9-13 NKJV

This scripture in Isaiah 28 shows it demands adapting to the slow yet painstakingly detailed manner of our instructor. It demands a commitment of time in waiting to listen on the part of the disciple. Isaiah 50:4-6 further reflects what Jesus said in Mark 4:23-24 (AMPC), that the development of the tongue of the learned is the result of listening intently, and a readiness to commit time before rushing out for the day.

*But alas this is an instantaneous and pre-occupied society! There is so much stuff coming at us. From TV, to mobile phones, emails, texts, satellite links, cable newsfeed and podcasts, that we scarcely have time to reflect, yet spiritual maturity cannot be downloaded by hitting the keys on the computer*— UCB Radio

Beloved, it takes time and discipline in hearing Him to attain to Isaiah 28:9-10. Don’t be like the immature, the undisciplined who is satisfied with milk, not desirous of and unable to comprehend the manner of instruction that is instituted and pleasing unto the Lord. To scorn or despise His manner of instruction is to flirt with death (Isa. 28:11-14).
Shalom.
