Mentoring is a collaborative process where a more experienced person, or mentor, helps a less experienced person, or mentee, develop their skills and goals. Mentoring can help with a believer’s personal walk with God as well as professional development, particularly in the manner the mentee’s faith applies in the marketplace. Mentoring can include:
- Role modeling: The mentor can provide a role model for the mentee.
- Sharing perspectives: The mentor and mentee can share their experiences and perspectives to help the mentee discover their own solutions.
- Providing guidance: The mentor can offer advice and guidance to help the mentee make decisions, plan, and take action, and
- Feedback: The mentor can provide feedback to help the mentee improve and grow.
Mentoring from biblical perspective is a personal and reciprocal relationship and is best in-person, although time and distance is shifting this boundary online.
Mentoring in the office environment can help in many areas, including:
- career development, helping employees realize their career goals and improve their engagement and satisfaction,
- Personal development, helping people improve their confidence and self-awareness, which can help in many areas of life.
- Adaptability, helping students develop adaptive qualities by providing a positive and supportive relationship.
In professional development, there is also another type of mentoring, speed mentoring, which involves brief, timed interactions between mentors and mentees. This type of mentoring is often used at networking.
Consider these two scriptures and an African proverb,
- Job 21:29 (AMPC)— Have you not asked those who travel this way, and do you not accept their testimony and evidences
- Ezekiel 21:21(AMPC)— For the king of Babylon stands at the parting of the way, at the fork of the two ways, to use divination. He shakes the arrows to and fro, he consults the teraphim (household gods), he looks at the liver
- African proverb—“The one who asks questions doesn’t lose his way”
Understand what lessons they speak on the wisdom of mentoring, seeking counsel from those who have travelled THE WAY, and not like the king of Babylon who sought direction by divination!
The one who asks questions doesn’t lose his way is a lesson in humility for those who want to reach their destination, and for the believer, our goal is God. Do you at this stage of your life and walk with God need a mentor? If there’s no sense of need, then go on, but if you do feel a sense of need, pray that the Lord lead you to one fit for you. Shalom.
