A Life Shaped by Integrity—Proverbs 20:7 (Part 2)

Expanding on the last posting, the Bible defines integrity as including:

  • moral uprightness
  • honesty
  • steadfast commitment to righteousness.

The biblical understanding of integrity is rooted in a deep sense of adherence to God’s commandments and a sincere dedication to living a life aligned with divine principles, a notion expressed by the Lord in John 17:21. God is complete and whole within Himself and just as His righteous actions flow from His wholeness so must it be with the believer whose actions of integrity flow from inner wholeness, integrating all parts of life with God’s truth.

Many passages explaining the biblical definition of integrity appear in the Psalms, particularly in Psalm 25:21: “May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope, Lord, is in you.” This verse emphasizes the protective nature of integrity and uprightness: individuals who walk in integrity find refuge and strength in their unwavering trust in God. The link between hope and integrity underscores how important moral character is to our relationship with God. Note the following scriptures:

  1. Proverbs 10:9 (NIV) states, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.”
  2. Proverbs 11:3 (NIV) declares “The integrity of the upright guides them, but the unfaithful are destroyed by their duplicity.”

These verses connect integrity connects to security; suggesting that individuals who uphold moral rectitude can navigate life being guided on the righteous path with confidence and assurance. They are kept from the destructive consequences associated with crooked paths and deceitful actions.

In the New Testament the Lord in Matthew 5:37 instructs, “All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” This underscores the importance of truthful and straightforward communication, reflecting integrity’s essence. The Lord demands a life where one’s words align with one’s actions without deceit or manipulation.

Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:25 emphasizes the transformative power of integrity, and here it is communal integrity “Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.” This instruction highlights the role of integrity in fostering genuine relationships within the body of believers.

In a world where people are conscious of speaking truth because it isn’t always pleasant, Integrity seem a rare virtue. Integrity is a defense

Ps.91.4 – He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
